It’s that time of year again—the season of back-to-back holidays. With endless candy, desserts, indulgent meals, and alcohol, all enjoyed during the coldest months, it’s the perfect recipe for overloading our bodies and potentially weakening our defenses. Our immune system is our body’s first line of defense and deserves more credit than it’s been given lately (no need to rehash the chaos—we all know).

Given the heightened focus on immunity over the past few years, I want to share some natural tips and practices to help you strengthen your immune system and keep it functioning at its best.

Natural Immune Boosting Tips

Elderberry is a safe and effective flu and cold treatment that can lessen symptoms and shorten the duration of sickness. Elderberries contain a high-level of flavonoids called anthocyanin, with black elderberries containing the highest levels. They also fight free radicals due to their high levels of antioxidants. Elderberry syrup and supplements are safe to take daily as a prophylactic.

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant 6000 times more effective than vitamin C. It can help lower inflammation and stress while enhancing the immune system. Natural astaxanthin enhances the production of antibody cells and also protects cells against membrane damage and oxidative stress.

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that helps decrease free radical damage. Humans do not produce vitamin C, but adequate stores of it can help assist the body when the immune response is threatened or down.

Selenium is another powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals keeping cells healthy. When selenium levels are heightened in the blood it enhances our natural immune response.

Oregano oil is known mainly for its powerful antimicrobial properties as well as anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. It is high in phytochemical compounds which have amazing antioxidant effects. The most abundant phenols in oregano oil are thymol and carvacrol. Thymol helps boost your immune system and encourages healing while preventing tissue damage. Carvacrol is highly effective against a multitude of bacterial infections. Oregano oil also contains several other healing properties and can be used like a course of antibiotics. Take one oregano oil capsule twice a day for several days to help knock out allergies, sinus infections, colds, flus, and bacterial infections.

Zinc is a critical mineral for sustaining a healthy immune system. A deficiency of zinc can reduce your immune function because certain immune system cells need it to activate or produce. Zinc aids in the elimination of pathogens (bacterium, virus, or other microorganism) which can lead to disease.

Sometimes overlooked for immune support, vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins for proper immune function as it helps suppress inflammatory responses. This aids in protection against the common cold and flu.

Black seed oil is an excellent source of antioxidants. It encourages the production of white blood cells which strengthens the immune system. It helps keep the immune system balanced so it doesn’t over or under react.
